By Bright Chikele:
THE Electoral Commission of Zambia says elections for council chairpersons in Mushindamo and Kalumbila will take place after August 11 following formation of councils in the two recently created districts.
The two districts were formerly part of Solwezi East and West constituencies respectively under Solwezi.
According to Solwezi district electoral officer Venture Kafula, ECZ had advised that elections in the newly-created districts would take place later than August 11 with fresh nominations.
Kafula, who is also Solwezi town clerk, told political parties participating in this year’s elections at a stakeholders meeting that they should now suspend their mayoral campaigns in Mushindamo and Kalumbila and remain in Solwezi Central.
“So meaning that Solwezi Municipal Council, its boundaries are those of Solwezi Central Constituency. As you do your campaigns, you should cease fire in those districts in terms of mayoral [elections]. Even as we do the elections, we shall not have ballot boxes for mayoral [elections] in those two constituencies. Mayoral elections will only be for Solwezi district,” said Kafula, adding that the ECZ was constrained from holding mayoral elections on August 11 in the two districts due to time limitations for nomination processes.
