A 43 year old woman, identified by the police as Alice Stambuli who claims to own an enterprise called LOUISE is in custody at Mchinji Police Station for allegedly crooking traders and in the process obtaining the Malawi’s staple food of maize worthy MK24, 083 180 from Mchinji renowned traders through false pretences.

Speaking to News Watch Reviews, Mchinji Police Spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino said several business people were tricked after being enticed with her mouth-watering speeches.

“It is alleged that the suspect approached and enticed Mr. Lawrence Zulu (42) of Kondoole village under Traditional Authourity (TA) Mlonyeni in Mchinji district and other traders within Mchinji Boma that she was buying the commodity at a price of K220/Kg. This attracted the traders who ended up supplying her with 2,100 bags which weighed 109, 469Kg and according to the price offered was equivalent to K24, 083 180.00”, said Kaitano.

Police further said that when the date to receive their proceeds was due, the suspect issued them with bank cheques while having knowledge that there was no money in her account. It was discovered too late after the traders had enquired from her bank, that’s also when they realized to have been tricked. This information forced them to make a proper follow-up to where the trucks that carried their maize had delivered the stock that is also the time they learnt that the woman had sold the maize to a certain company at a price of K180/kg.

“They also discovered that she pocketed K19, 704 420.00 from the sales of their sweat but she neither communicated of this selling price nor gave the proceeds realized from sales to the traders. This development prompted then to report the matter to police where a manhunt to arrest her was instituted until on September 20 when she was brought to book”, concluded Kaitano.

Meanwhile, the police has formally charged the woman with an offence of obtaining goods by false pretences which is contrary to section 319 of the penal code and will appear before court on Monday, September 26, 2016.

When she is through answering this case other similar offences are pending like one in Zomba where it is alleged that in April last year she obtained K1.6 Million from Mr. Samu Kaleke before she started playing her hide and seek games.

Alice Stambuli (43) comes from Edungu village in the area of Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba district.
