Scientists believe that Viagra can help prevent onset of a common form of dementia.

Scientists at St George University of London are currently testing tadalafil, a drug which is similar to viagra on volunteers to see if their theory is correct.

These experts think that erectile dysfunction drugs which work by increasing blood flow to the genitals could also help blood reach the brain.

The leader of the research, Dr Atticus Hainsworth said that they need to see if mental function is maintained for longer.

“We need to see if the mental function is maintained for longer and we hope that it would either prevent or slow down muscular dementia”, said Dr Atticus.

The scientists think that this could ward off vascular dementia which affects 150 000 people in UK.

According to the scientists, this problem is caused when blood vessels become diseased, which restricts cerebral flow.

After concluding their research, and if it has been discovered that the drug does help blood reach the brain, then they will do a second trial to see if it improves cognition.

At the moment they have conducted trials with 24 people in London.
