A Howick serial rapist has been sentenced to life imprisonment, Kwazulu-Natal police said on Sunday.

“The Pietermaritzburg Regional Court convicted and sentenced Siyabonga Mokoena, 32, of Sphumelele informal settlement to life imprisonment for four counts of rape,” said Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.

Mokoena also received a sentence of 10 years each for three counts of robbery.

He was arrested in 2012 for a housebreaking and later linked back to various crimes dating back since 2008.

“The accused would terrorise the victims in the area threatening them with a knife and then raping them. He would also robbed them of their cellphones, cash and other items.”

The first incident took place on September 9 2008 when a 56-year-old woman was attacked and raped near the Umngeni river, Howick.

The last victim was a hitchhiker near the N3 freeway who was raped by Mokoena in June 2012.

Kwazulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa said that the sentencing should serve as a warning to would-be rapists. “Our officers will leave no stone unturned against those who abuse women and children.”
