The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says it is set to hold by-elections in October in areas where its councilors died.
MEC is supposed to hold the by-elections in Mchinji West whose councilors passed on amid the March parliament meeting in Lilongwe Kaliyeka and Zomba Sadzi Wards whose councilors also passed on.
The Chief Executive officer Willy Kalonga said all is set for the by-elections to happen in October 2016 and MEC has sent its financial plan to the treasury for subsidizing for the by-elections.
“We are extremely prepared to hold the by-elections and we anticipate treasury to fund us. These areas should have reprentatives as soon as possible,” said Kalonga.
Already, the elections body said it would hold the by-elections after the arrangement of MEC chiefs and going of the 2016-2017 national spending plan.
Minister of Finance spokesperson, Nations Msowoya said the ministry is right now scrutinising the by-elections spending plan before assets are dispensed for the elections.
“We got a financial plan from MEC and right now the treasury authorities are scrutinising and examining it, after that we will be prepared to dispense the assets,” said Msowoya.
