New Mkondezi hospital which is situated along the main road from Mzuzu before Chinthechi turn off in the lakeshore district of Nkhatabay is a refuge for the people in the district . Nkhatabay district is a well known hub of tourism for the northern part and lakeshore for the beautiful lake.
Despite the economic revenue that is generated in the baobab land, basic services like health are still behind in the district. The non gas station district is home to one of Malawi’s only big islands, namely Likoma and Chizumulu. And with a population of more than 300,000 people which 70% of them live by the waters according to the Malawi 2008 census report. Access to health services is of paramount important, that is government thought of building the new hospital with help from donors.
The new hospital has modern infrastructure and has well built houses for medical staff,that was not available at the old john Leng hospital. The Mkondezi hospital though is 3km away from Nkhatabay boma will be able to handle the districts population according to the hospitals public relations officer Christopher Singini: “all people are encouraged to go and visit the new hospital for any medical or health related issue. However when people are asked if the hospitals new location puts a burden in the access of health services?. Most of them say the development is good and distance is not an issue as that is what they wanted in developing the district.
