A 23yr old man identied as Jacob Msumba is in police custody in Nkhata Bay on allegations that he set ablaze two houses, one for himself and the other for his mother.
According to Nkhata Bay police public relations officer, Ignatius Esau said on June 8, 2016 at around 2000hrs, the suspect arrived home drunk. After his arrival, he started accusing his 61 year-old mother, Serah Chirwa of teaching his son wichcraft.
“A quarrel broke out between the two after the mother had denied the allegations that his son levelled against her. Due to this, the suspect got furious and decided to set ablaze his mother’s house. He then took a bunch of grass lit with fire to accomplish his mission but accidentally, the fire landed on his own house thereby setting it ablaze in process”, said Esau.
“He proceeded and set ablaze his mothers house, but fortunate enough neighbours came in time and managed to put out the fire while the suspect’s house was completely burnt. Approximately, the damaged items are valued at MK200, 000”, concluded Esau.
When the matter was brought to police’s attention, scene of incident was visited and the suspect was arrested.
He is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of Arson which is contrary to section 337 of the penal code. Arson is punishable by life imprisonment as it’s maximum sentence.
The suspect and her mother both comes from Kamoza village in the area of Traditional Authority ( TA ) Mkumbira in Nkhata Bay district.
