Kasungu First Grade Magistrate Court on October 13, 2016, convicted and sentenced John Makina, 37, to a fine 80,000 and 30,000 for Illegal Possession of Medical Drugs contrary to Section 45 of Pharmacy Act and Operating Illegal Clinic contrary to Section 59 of the Medicine Practioner and Dentist Act.
Makina was arrested in a joint operation by the Police and officials from Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons Board.
In court, Makina pleaded guilty as charged. Before sentence, the State through Prosecutor Sergeant Francis Malenga of Kasungu Police Station appealed for a stiff sentence on Makina as his hehaviour had a direct effect on other people’s lives.
Malenga further bemoaned Makina’s behaviour of running illegal clinic which really put people’s lives in his community at danger. Kasungu First Grade Magistrate, His Worship Damiano Banda concurred with Malenga and said acts of Makina were really dangerous to the lives of the people. Banda then sentenced Makina to 80,000 for the first count and 30,000 for the second count and in default 12 months imprisonment with hard labour.
John Makina comes from Kanthole village under SubTraditional Authority (STA) Mphomwa in Kasungu district.
