A 30 year old man, Thomas Chirwa has been sentenced to one year imprisonment with hard labour for charging her 54 year old half mother, Mrs. Idah Mlenga with witchcraft in Nkhata Bay district.
According to the district’s police public relations officer Sergeant Ignatius Esau, told News Watch Reviews that the convict has for a long time been accusing the complainant of practicing witchcraft.
“Mrs. Mlenga was bitter with the suspect’s behavior and she decided to report him to Chintheche Police who later arrested him and charged him with the offence which infringes section 4 of Witchcraft Act”, said Esau
When he appeared before the Nkhata Bay First Grade Magistrate court on Thursday, September 1, 2016, he pleaded guilty to the charge and in mitigation, he told the court that he looks after his wife and three children therefore if sent to prison, his family will suffer much.
Passing his sentence First Grade Magistrate Anthony Banda said he noted with concern that despite numerous messages that are being sent to the general public on the need to avoid charging people with witchcraft, people like the convict are still doing the same.
To deter other would be offenders from committing the very same offence; the magistrate sentenced the convict to one year imprisonment with hard labour with effect from the day of his arrest.
Both the complainant and the convict hail from Mfufu village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Malanda in the district.
