Police women in Nkhata Bay on May 23, 2017 donated cash as a start-up capital to widows whose husbands died while serving in the Malawi police service.
The function took place at Nkhata Bay Police Station on Wednesday afternoon.
The initiative which is a brainchild of Mai Inspector General of police, Mrs Ruth Kachama aims at emperworing the widows economically by giving them start-up capital for them to engage in small scale businesses.
Speaking during the function, Officer in-Charge for Nkhata Bay police station Mrs Sekani Tembo (DCP) thanked mai Kachama for the initiative saying it will go a long way in alleviating the suffering the widows and their children have been going through following the death of their husbands.
Apart from underscoring the need for the widows to desist from risky behaviours for them to avoid contracting HIV-Aids, the Officer in-Charge also encouraged them to send their children to school for them to be productive future leaders.
The widows who were each given K20,000 cash and a 2 meter chitenje cloth praised the Ispector General for the gesture and promised that the money they have received will be used for its intended purpose.
During the function, seven widows benefited from the initiative and according to Mrs. Sekani Tembo, this is an on-going process whereby other widows also will be identified and assisted in the near future.
