One person has died and two others injured after a delivery truck which was coming from Blantyre heading to Chitipa was involved in a fatal road accident at Mlowe stage on M5 along Chintheche – Nkhata Bay road on Wednesday.
Confirming the development, Nkhata Bay Police Relations Officer Ignatius Esau said the accident happened at around 1000hrs on Wednesday.
“We can confirm with you about the accident which has happened at Mlowe stage. The motor vehicle involved in the accident with registration number SA 6218, Mercedes Benz Van, was driven by Stauzio Ng’omba, 41, of Chilumpha village in the area of Traditional Authority Ntchema in Chiradzulu district”, said Esau.
Esau further said the deceased person is a male passenger named Maxwell Chimwaza of Chidothi village in the area of Traditional Authourity Chiwere in Dowa district.
According to the Police, on the material day and time, the driver was driving his motor vehicle from Blantyre going to Chitipa and the vehicle was loaded with 450 bags of bread flour and had three passenger’s on board.
“As he was driving through a point at Mlowe, due to fatigue he slightly dozed off as he was trying to negotiate a left bend, as a result his vehicle went to the extreme offside of the road where it run over a heap of Bananas and overturned two times”, concluded Esau.
Following the impact one passenger was pronounced dead on arrival at Nkhata Bay District Hospital due to severe head injury, fractured ribs with ruptured Spleen, involving right kidney and internal bleeding, while the driver and his assistance escaped with minor injuries.
