One person has died whilst another has been seriously injured after they were hit by a motor vehicle in Nkhata Bay.
According to Nkhata Bay Police spokesman, Ignatius Esau, on November 4, 2016 Mr Raphael Mapando Chisale, 60 years of Kalulu village under Trafitional Authority Njolomole in Ntcheu district was driving a motor vehicle with registration number MG677AB from Chintheche direction heading Nkhata Bay.
“Upon reaching Chipuzumumba area, the driver saw unknown pedestrian who dashed into the road from left to right handside of the road”, he said.
In an effort to avoid hitting him, the driver swerved his motor vehicle to the right hand side of the road where he hit six pedestrians who were walking towards the same direction.
“Following the impact, one pedestrian Allien Nyamaso died on spot due to head injuries and the other one Mwandunga Banda sustained fractures on both of his legs whilst the rest escaped with minor injuries and are being treated at Nkhata Bay District Hospital”, said Esau.
The driver is currently being kept at Nkhata Bay Police where he is expected to be charged with the offence of causing death due to recless or negligent driving which is contrary to section 126 of Road Traffic Act and is expected to answer the same in court.
The deceased Allien Nyamaso 48, hailed from Simon village under Traditional Authority Mankhambira in Nkhata Bay district.
