MALAWI: Ngoni culture fuels trafficking

    initiatitives is said to be helping the mitigation of human
    rights abuses among girls and women like trafficking.
    “The Malawi Council of churches(MCC) who in
    collaboration with The Malawi human rights resource
    center under gender coordinating network are doing a great
    job on sensitization and awareness.’’ Said Inkosi Kampingo
    Sibande.
    The Inkosi, who in his area Eswazini in Mzimba has seen
    the number of girls being trafficked just by a phone call
    away, bemoaned the development as not cultural.
    “It was true that there are cases of abuse in his area towards
    women and girls, but we there also intervention made to
    reduce the malpractice.
    “Introduction of special village committees to make sure
    that both men and women are treated equally in
    development project is one intervention.”
    The social welfare office in Mzimba over10 cases last year
    However, project coordinator Mtheto Lungu for Malawi
    council of churches said it was of importance for them to
    intervene as cases were on the rise in the area.
    Lungu said‘whether interventions like this one bear fruits,
    you just have to blame it on tradition and cultural norms
    that are deep rooted with the Ngoni people.
