Malawi national team, popularly known as “the Flames” out-smarted Comoros in their first game which was hosted at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday afternoon.

A lone stunning freekick in the 31st minute by Gerald Phiri Junior who plies his trade with Platinum Stars in South Africa was enough to see the Flames beat the Comoros in their first leg match.

Played before a disappointing crowd, the Flames displayed a vastly improved passin game that was a beauty to watch.

Lack of consistence in shooting and confidence in front of the goal made strikers Gabadinho Mhango and Jabulani Linje fail to capitalise on chances they created during the game.

The blunt striking force for the Flames failed to score on one on one situations with only the goal keeper to beat.

In another group B match, Cameroon edged Morocco 1-0 courtesy of Vincent Aboubakar’s goal in the 29th minute of the game.

The tournament will be held in 2019 in Cameroon.

In other AFCON qualifiers results;

Zambia 0-1 Mozambique.
Burundi 3-0 South Sudan
Nigeria 0-2 South Africa.
Botswana 0-1Mauritania
Niger 0-0 Swaziland

Guinea-Bissau 1-0 Namibia
