Two people, a teacher and his student drowned to death in Lake Malawi on September 17, 2016, during an entertainment trip in Salima.
Salima Police publist Gift Chitowe spoke to News Watch Reviews that the entertainment event was organised by Chipasula B and Area 25 mosques.
“Chipasula B and Area 25 Mosques organised a joint trip to Salima by using the same vehicle, 7 toner lorry for their madras students. After arriving in Salima, they went straight to Baobab which is one of the cottages in Salima”, said Chitowe.
“At around 1600 hours, Grace Wilson aged between 13-15 years went into deep waters and failed to swim back to the shores of the Lake hence the teacher Mr Osman Chingwalu, 25 years decided to rescue the girl but unfortunately they both drowned to death”, concluded Chitowe.
Salima Police in conjunction with the local villagers launched a search party and managed to recover both dead bodies. Both bodies are said to be from Chipasula B mosque and lying at Salima District Hospital mortury waiting for their relatives to identify them.
Postmortem conducted at Salima Hospital revealed that death was due to suffocation.
Meanwhile, Police is advising all members of the general public that whenever they are at the Lake, they should not go into deep waters if they do not know how to swim to avoid the occurence of such incidents.
