After visiting the former president at his home on Monday, the Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) leader, Julius Malema is confident that Thabo Mbeki will cast his vote for EFF.
With the local government elections just less than 48hrs away, Julius Malema and other EFF leaders paid former president Thabo Mbeki a visit to try and garner his vote in Wednesday’s election.
The EFF leader said they did not go to Mbeki for an endorsement, but asked for his vote.
“The EFF represents Africanism and the former president is an Africanist. We came to canvas for the vote of former President Mbeki, and he gave us a very positive response because he said his vote is a secret,” said Malema.
Mbeki has been fairly quiet when it comes to campaigning ahead of the elections and he has not commented on the meeting with Malema.
Thabo Mbeki’s spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga said the visit was a standard part of election campaigning.
“It’s a normal thing that any party would do. If the DA or ANC or any other party knocked on his door, he would oblige,” he said. He said the ANC aims to build an inclusive society and would not view accepting a visit from the EFF as criminal”, he said.
