Despite breaking the deadlock in the fourth minute through the captain of the team, Wayne Rooney, they failed to contain the pressure mounted on them by the minnows.

The Icelandic team equalised through Ragnar Sirgurdsson before Kolbeinn Sigthorsson’s killer blow in the 18th minute to put the game to bed.

England players looked dejected after the game since they thought they will have a soft run on the team which was not even considered to reach this stage of the tournament.

With a population of about 330 000, the team has proved that they are not easy to beat. No man is an Island, that’s what is happening in France.

Roy Hodgson Resigns.

Few minutes after being humiliated by the minnows, Hodgson relieved himself from the team’s duties by stepping down immediately.

“I would have loved to stay on for another two years, however I can’t and my contract was already up after the Euros. I have to give a chance to someone else to oversee the progress of this young and talented team”, said Hodgson.

Roy Hodgson took the reigns from Fabbio Capello who resigned in 2012. Since then he has never won any major tournament. During his tenure as England coach, he led England to the quarter finals of Euro and lost to Italy through post match penalties.

The 2014 World Cup in Brazil was another disappointing moment for England who crashed out after playing just two games.

The Icelandic coach, Lars Lagerback said he is ready to cause more upsets at the tournament and the next in line is France a team they will face in the quarter finals.

“We are ready for any team at the tournament, we will fight with our hearts out until to the end of the tournament”, said Lars.
