In a bid to combat deaths through drowning, parents and guardians are being urged by the police to pay attention to minors when they are around any water body where the likelihood of drowning might take place so that lives may be saved.
Police’s announcement follows the incident that occured at Chikampha village in the area of Traditional Authority Fukamapiri in Nkhata Bay distirict following the death a 5 year old boy identified as Madalitso Chirwa after he drowned in Lifupa river.
“The young boy met his fate on May 12, 2017 when he accompanied his mother to Lifupa river where the later went for washing. As the mother was busy washing, Madalitso descended into the said river for swimming but he ended up drowning”, confirmed Nkhata Bay police spokesperson Ignatius Esau.
Welwishers tried to rescue him but their efforts proved futile since by the time the boy was being taken out of the water, he was already dead.
