Two kids have been smoldered to death after the house they were left in burst into flames. As per James Mbewe, 34, who is the father of the deceased children, identified the two as Bridget Mbewe, 5 and Elizabeth Mbewe, 2.
The incident happened on July 20, 2016 at around 1600 hours at Chizula Village in the area of Traditional Authority Wimbe in Kasungu district.
In an interview with News Watch Reviews, Kasungu Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Edna Mzingwitsa said the father who operates Kabaza within Kasungu town, left home early in the morning leaving his children in the hands of his wife. At around 1600 hours the mother of the two children went out to visit her friends at a nearby compound.
“Whilst there a few houses including Mbewe’s home inside the compound burst into flames with the two kids inside. Unfortunately community members who were around didn’t realize that the two children were left inside until when the mother returned and discovered that the two were burnt to death”, she said.
“The flame is suspected to have ejected from a close-by spot where some little young girls were roasting sweet potatoes”, said Edna.
Postmortem conducted at Kasungu District Hospital revealed death was due to severe burns.
