The government of Burkina Faso has banned an annual beauty contest for women with the biggest buttocks citing that events like these are sexist.
Minister Laure Zongo said the outcry of people on social media who were asking the authenticity of adverts of “Miss Bim Bim” carrying an image of two fully dressed women with exaggeratedly large bums pursuased her to ban the event.
“The cristism of people on social media pursuaded me to ban the event. Our role is to do everything to avoid damaging the image of women”, said Laure Zondo.
On the other hand, male organiser of the event, Hamado Doambahe said their aim was to promote a more positive body image for African women and to encourage fashion designers to use African costumes.
“Our focus was to promote our African women and not to degrade them. We wanted to put them on the map as part of promoting them”, said Hamado.
The government has banned this event to deplore the emphasis on men judging women’s body shapes.
