A sombre mood has engulfed people of Bwanthuwa village in the area of Traditonal Authority Timbiri in Nkhata Bay district following the death of a 6 year old boy Patrick Chunda after he was mercilessly attacked by a crocodile in Liphasa river.
Nkhata Bay Police Publist Ignatius Esau told News Watch Reviews that the incident occured on November 4, 2016 when Patrick accompanied his mother to Limphasa river where the later went to wash clothes.
“Due to hot weather experienced in the district, the young boy couldn’t do otherwise but to swim in shallow waters of the said river which is prone to these deadly creatures”, said Esau.
He added, “while he was enjoying the fresh waters, a crocodile attacked him. His mother shouted for help after her efforts to rescue him hit a snag as the crocodile took the innocent boy to unknown destination within the river”, affirmed Esau.
News Watch Reviews understands that the community members gathered at the scene of the incident and launched a search for both the boy and the crocodile.
Later on Patrick was found dead and the search continued while in the process they found the ruthless crocodile and managed to kill it.
One community member identified as Mr Goodwin Mwenda sustained a cut on his right arm after the same crocodile bit him.
Police and medical personnel visited the scene of this horrible incident where postmortem that was conducted showed that Patrick’s death was due to severe loss of blood secondary to open wounds incured during the attack.
