In a quest to end the recent crimes of rape and defilement which are on the increase in Malawi, Police in the northern district of Malawi, Nkhatabay, are keeping in custody a 53 years old man identified as Stonard Mtengo on suspicion of defiling a six years old girl at Kawalazi Estate in Nkhatabay district.
In an interview with News Watch Reviews, Nkhata Bay police public relations officer, Ignatius Esau said the incident happened on May 9, 2016 when her parents went to the funeral at a nearby village.
“It is true that we have arrested the suspect. On the material day, the girl’s father Mr Lighten Banda, in company of his wife left home to a nearby village for a funeral ceremony leaving behind the victim with his friends playing. The suspect took advantage of parent’s absence and invited the young girl into his kitchen where he defiled her”, said Esau.
When her parents came back, the girl reported the matter to them and they reported the incident to Mzenga police unit. The police reffered the girl to Nkhata Bay District Hospital where upon being examined, results showed that the girl was indeed defiled.
Stonard will appear before court soon to answer a charge of Defilement which is contary to section 138 of the penal code .
The suspect hails from Chiwala Mtengo village in the area of Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba district.
