A sombre mood engulfed Kapalapata village in Nkhata Bay district after a 40 year-old man identified as Kenani Mwawa died after drowning in Kamtambo river in the district.
In an interview with Nkhata Bay police relations officer Ignatius Esau, said the deceased’s wife, Mrs Tame Mwawa told the police that on June 2, 2016 the deceased left his house to drink beer at a nearby drinking joint.
“We received a report that there is a dead body floating on the waters of Kamtambo river. The deceased went to a drinking joint and never came back. The police visited the crime scene and confirmed the incident”, said Esau.
Esau who played down foul play further said the deceased did not report back home until the next day when his body was found floating dead in Kamtambo river.
The matter was reported to police and scene of incident was visited by both police and medical personnel who conducted postmortem that revealed death was due to suffocation.
The deceased hailed from Kapalapata village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Timbiri in Nkhata Bay district.
Meanwhile, police in the district are appealing to the general public to avoid crossing rivers whilst drunk so that deaths as the one in question can be avoided.
