Mzuzu Senior Resident Magistrate Court has convicted and sentenced Mayeso Kamanga, 23, to 6 years imprisonment with hard labour for breaking into a building and committing a felony contrary to section 311(1) of the penal code.
According to state prosecutor Charles Chilala, last month the convict broke into Mganthira CCAP prayer house and stole one amplifier, two omega speakers and 50kg of maize all valued at K100, 000.00.
“It was reported that on that day the whole congregation went to Zolozolo Church for Easter prayers. When the watch man resumed his normal duty at around 20:00 hours he discovered that one window of the prayer house was broken. This made him to check inside where he noticed that the mentioned items were stolen. Matter was reported to Chiputula Police Unit and investigations were conducted which led to the arrest of Kamanga”, said Cecilia Mfune, Mzuzu Police deputy spokesperson.
The accused pleaded guilty to the charge
Passing judgement, Senior Resident Magistrate Brian Sambo said Kamanga deserves stiffer punishment for stealing in a church. He, therefore, sentenced him to 6 years imprisonment.
The convict hails from Kanyenda Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Kalulu in Ntchisi District.
